Scope and Purpose

This course is designed and developed to provide training and a comprehensive guide to all Engine Officers in maintaining the satisfactory operation of the engine room and its machinery, watchkeeping, and self-awareness on the safety aspects when entering Ice or extremely cold weather areas, In accordance with STCW Code, Section B-V/4, 1.1.2, SOLAS Chapter V and SIRE 2.0 -12.6.1.

 
At the end of the course, learners will be able to:
  • Learn the effects of cold temperatures, clothing, and survival equipment, survival in cold weather
  • Understand vessel characteristics, vessel types, hull designs, hull strengthening requirements, ice class of different classification societies, limitations of ice classes
  • Determine the sensitive sea areas regarding discharge; Special Areas in MARPOL and Polar Code, MARPOL and Polar Code discharge requirements, Oil spill equipment limitations, consequence of pollution in a cold climate
  • Develop an understanding of the safe working procedures; awareness of the most common hull and equipment damages and how to avoid them; risks and precautions in cold weather
  • Distinguish and explain the different types of propulsion systems and rudders, including awareness of system strength and capacity limitations, use of healing and trimming systems, engine loads and cooling problems, and low-temperature system performance
